Rachelle Garniez
Forsaking a "formal education" for the Rivington School / East Village / Downtown performance and art scene of the '80's, she picked up the accordion one afternoon in 1985 to perform a song at Danceteria later that night and fell in love with the instrument; or as she puts it: "the joke backfired" and the very next day she quit her part-time job and began playing in the subways and streets of Manhattan and quite soon thereafter began to work performing and recording in a wide variety of situations.
She formed her own band, the Fortunate Few, in 1997 and since then has released three CDs of original songs independently on her label, Real Cool Records (named in honor of Chester Himes). The latest Real Cool Records release, "Melusine Years" (2008) is a more intimate sounding recording featuring the piano, claviola, bell, accordion and vocals of Rachelle accompanied by the talents of Matt Munisteri on guitars and banjo, and Dave Hofstra on bass and tuba. Some of Rachelle's current work includes being musical co-director of the neo-cabaret troupe The Citizens Band and returning to perform at the TED conference in February '08 as a member of the house band led by Thomas Dolby. She has performed at the Festival Internationale de Louisiane, International Akkordeon Festival in Vienna, Riverbank Festival in NYC, the TED Conference in Monterey, CA and festivals and concerts throughout Italy. Rachelle's songs have received numerous placements in film and television soundtracks. She has composed and performed music for theater including the Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children's Theater and NYU's Experimental Theater Wing productions of "The Merchant of Venice" and "The Taming of the Shrew".
